Oprah for President

***New Preface*** Oprah has power, man. No one can deny that. She puts people on the best seller list just by saying a book title, she can raise hundreds of thousands in one day for LiveStrong just by challenging her audience, and I am confident that her Katrina efforts will raise millions of dollars and help build hundreds of new homes. A few readers and commenters have been cynical about her, and I know that goes with the flow, but no one can deny what an amazing, powerful, compassionate woman she is.

You are an inspiration in so, so many ways, and you are the epitome of humanitarian. On top of it all, you also look simply fabulous. I love you, and after you donated 10,000,000 of your own dollars to help rebuild and furnish homes in New Orleans, I love you even more.

On today's show,
Oprah announced that she will donate $10 mill toward rebuilding homes and lives in the aftermath of Katrina, and that she also set up a registry so people can purchase items from couches to pots & pans to furnish and equip the new homes. You can also sponsor an entire house ($50, 000) and make cash donations via the new site.

By the way, Jennifer Aniston looks amazing; I freakin' love her, too! Oprah's interview with her was way too short, though...

22 Band Aides had a tale from the tour:

Go Oprah! I LOVE her! (despite what the Producer says) I swear...I wish she could adopt me.

Sean--you're not the only one who has that opinion; as Chase implied, we had a conversation with the CPMC "Producer" regarding Oprah and he shares your views.

The only person I like less than Celine Dion is Mariah Carey...

I TAKE IT BACK!!! The person I dislike the most ever is Star Jones, which we discussed in the comments section under Madonna's birthday post.

OMG- no seriously, I love Oprah.

I have been saying O for President since this Bush debacle began. Wouldn't she amazing?!

She is honestly the epitome of what I would love to be someday. I love, love, love her...

Sean--I know she's a lawyer; the chick can't get through a sentence without mentioning that.

You ladies...you'd jump off a bridge if Oprah told you to.

Fellas - want to make your woman insane with rage? Tell her the only reason Oprah does these things (donates money, gives away cars, etc.) is for ratings and no other reason.

I have to agree with Phil on this one. Besides, Oprah's the antichrist.

Any contribution to the cause is commendable and shouldn't be slighted.

However, according to Forbes in 2004 (and this number may be higher now) Oprah's net worth then was about 1.3 Billion dollars.

As a percentage, $10 million is approximately 0.008% of 1.3 billion.

That is the equivelant of a 20 dollar donation by someone who's net worth is $2500 banked/ saved balance - and assuming that income and expenses balance each other out (although in Oprah's case, income is exponentially higher).

    I'm a dork. Sorry. Oprah's still aight.

I thought the same thing, but I didn't do the math--I wouldn't even know where to begin!!

I am sure most of her money is in investments, and 10 mill is still a HUGE amount of money. I didn't see Trump donating an equivalently huge amount (he did give Ellen a whopping $500 this morning). Oprah's donation, and the registry, are going to rebuild a lot of homes down there.

Oprah is definitely amazing!! I would rather give money to her than just about any of the "larger" organizations...at least you know without a doubt that she will make sure it isn't "mishandled"!

Yeah Oprah has tons of money to give away, but so far she's been the only loaded celeb/institution to give up that much. The entire NFL hasn't raised that much among themselves and through their telethon. Talk about a bunch of chiselers.

I agree that Oprah is very powerful and her success derives from a commitment to doing excellent work - whether on her TV show, charities, or magazine.

I always wonder who will be the first woman president. I think the American people would sooner vote for Oprah than Hillary Clinton.

Bottom line: Oprah ROCKS! She is an amazingly talented woman who has created her own success striclty because of who she is. She isn't an actor or singer...she is real. Yeah, she may play it up a bit on TV, but SO WHAT! She is a giver and does so much for people on so many levels.
I admire her so much for what she has accomplished and given.

If you can't even ackowledge that...then there may be something wrong with you/

We are just going to have to agree to disagree because I am right...and you are insane. :-)

Oh, and she is NOT a man-hater! She is just an uplifter of women.

I thought of you last night, Penny, as the new tv season got underway. How will she juggle her social calendar and keep on top of things??? By the way, Medium totally sucked. I swear they've stylized that show to meet the needs of ADD viewers.

No, she had the president of the company that owned the store (I don't recall which) on her show to apologize to her -

She was defending herself against the media who made her out to be a diva by having this man on her show to back up her claim that Oprah did not behave like a diva and the story was blown out of proportion.

It was funny, because the president of this company really didn't say anything about his store being at fault - Oprah sort of goaded him into saying they had an employee who was rude to her. To me, she dug herself a little hole there, but in her mind she justified the whole incident by having this guy on TV...

To use one of Kathryn's analogy's - he apologyped her. "I'm sorry - if you were offended, but, we were getting ready for a show and weren't allowing any customers in the store". Good stuff (I came home early and my wife, of course, was watching).

Yeah, Phil, that segment of her show was creepy. Hermes didn't truly apologize, except to admit that the woman who turned Oprah away was probably rude. Oprah's point with the segment, I think, was to say that it had all gotten blown outta proportion; she had actually just walked away from the situation, but her friend Gayle kept making a fuss to the shopgirl...

Honestly, me, too. I could deal with Oprah, but not the other one. They would kill each other, anyway...
