...and we all thought Virginia couldn't get any worse!

(Lifted directly from WaPo.com)

If you liked him as Bennifer . . . you'll love him as Benator!

That's the hot new idea being tossed around by Virginia Democrats, who are desperately searching for a big name to challenge the reelection bid of rising GOP star Sen. George Allen next year, now that outgoing Gov. Mark Warner has ducked out.

Why, who should happen to be pondering a move to Thomas Jefferson country but a certain square-jawed media magnet with a taste for liberal politics and millions to spend on it . . . Ben Affleck ! Star of "Gigli" and the J.Lo tab romance, now happily settled with "Alias" star Jennifer Garner.

The couple, expecting their first child, have been shopping for real estate around Charlottesville. British tabloids claim it's a done deal; we will only go so far as to report that they checked out at least one country estate a few weeks ago.

It was about that time that party officials started batting Affleck's name around. "It's spread pretty widely, at least in the political underground," University of Virginia professor Larry Sabato, Virginia's premier pundit, told Michael Shear, The Post's Richmond correspondent.
Another name on the wish list: blockbuster legal-thriller writer John Grisham . But the central Virginia farmhouse owner, who gives generously to Democrats and did a stint in the Mississippi legislature, has brushed off past overtures, sources say.

In truth, the Dems are less concerned with beating Allen than slowing him down. Both he and Warner are eyeing the 2008 presidential race.

Affleck spokesman Ken Sunshine said the rumors are baseless, though "he would be a superb candidate for public office in the future. Right now, he's very busy directing his first feature movie for Disney, 'Gone, Baby, Gone.'"
Does it matter that the guy is a Southie, never having lived in VA? Oh, yeah, add to that the fact that he has NO political experience?? Hmm, guess not...

He had never even registerd to vote until the media busted him on it after his endless campaigning for Gore & Kerry and explaining how important it was to vote.

Is there anybody who had more promise than young Ben Affleck who has made more bad career choices than him?

Good point, KO. I understand someone wanting to represent NY (even though I don't heart Hillary), but why would someone randomly choose VA? Not that the state couldn't use more democrats! (Maybe that's why...?)

This is sad news. It's not that he couldn't be a good politician...I'm sure he could.

It is just that the Democratic party is a joke if it thinks it can do the same thing as the GOP did w/ the Obama race in Illinois.

The party is in a sad state of affairs if this story is true.

It's all over the noon news today, too, so that means it is definitely true. The news is never wrong.

"desperately seeking" is the pertinent phrase here. the democrats have lost their minds and are forcing me to consider switching over to the dark side - republicans *gasp*.

maybe he chose virginia because it is a more "refined" location than west virgina, where jennifer is from? but i guess "refined" and Affleck don't really go hand in hand.

    LOL, AUA.

Seriously, though, Reagan started out that way. He was passionate about politics and got noticed when he spoke at some function.

And look at him now... if Affleck could do that for the Democrats, who knows?

VPDior.....I was thinking the same about the location. JG is from WV.......you don't really hear of famous people living in WV much. I am sure JG wanted to be close to home now that she is going to have a kid.......so VA was a decent and close location.

I think I will laugh if he does run.

All I'm saying about Reagan is that he went a long way. We now have freakin' airport named after him. He's the idol of the GOP. I'm just saying... he could potentially galvanize the Dems. Of course such cult of personality is rare, but hey... no one knows the future.

I know what you're sayin', Girl, I just like any chance to go "WTF??" regarding Reagan. That whole airport thing makes me wanna vomit, that's all. The guy FIRED all the air traffic controllers when he was in office, and then we name an airport after him?? That was just a wee bit odd. Besides, the airport was already named after a president: Washington National...
